Cliff Diving into New Ministry Opportunities
by Molly Shorter
I have a friend who recently went skydiving. It was what she wanted to do for her birthday. I have another friend who went hang-gliding and loved it. I'm not a skydiver and I don't feel compelled to strap in and jump - basically I don't care for the idea of free-falling! But the Lord has put me on the edge of the cliff a few times in my journey with Him and called me to jump off in faith.
When God put the first opportunity in front of me to be involved in the music ministry in my church I was excited but so scared! With God's urging I jumped off the cliff with both feet and jumped full force into ministry. Years later God called my husband and me to leave that ministry and move to another ministry in another state. Once again, I was excited but so scared of the changes! I was so comfortable with the ministry I was in to the point that it defined who I was. Assured that God was calling us to jump, we jumped. He faithfully caught us and blessed us through that time.
Today, I'm in the music ministry at a wonderful church and I'm blessed to work with a large group of musicians who love the Lord with all their heart. This place of ministry involved yet another "edge of the cliff" decision to leave a place we loved and move to a place that God was calling us to. With all of these experiences I've learned a few things:
1- Cliffs always include a decision to retreat or trust God and jump.
2- Cliffs always include change and growth as you walk in faith
3- Cliffs always include abundant blessings - once your feet have left the edge.
Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." Usually the view from the top of the cliff looking down is hazy. You can't see very far until you jump. But when God calls you to take that jump, by faith, He will catch you and illuminate the way as you go. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 says, "The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it."
Dear fellow musician has God called you to step out in faith and do the seemingly impossible? Is He calling you to trust Him to move forward with your music ministry or move you out of your comfort zone into something brand new, maybe in a brand new location? Maybe He's enlarging your ministry or big changes are ahead. Are you standing on the "edge of the cliff" looking down into the great unknown? If God is calling then jump off the cliff with full faith that He will catch you. He will put your feet on new solid ground. He who has called you is faithful and He will do it.
