What Should I Wear to Sing?

What Should I Wear to Sing?

by

You've been asked to sing in church. You have prayerfully chosen the song you will be singing. Now, you have another big decision to make. What will you wear when you sing? You look into your closet, and you begin to wonder, "How should I dress to sing at Church?"

Honestly, I used to spend more time staring into my closet on Saturday evenings than any other time of the week trying to figure out what to wear. And, I'm embarrassed to admit that I have even been late on Sunday morning because I was still trying to figure that out! Now, I don't want to be trivial. I don't believe God is overly concerned with what we wear to church. The Bible says in 1 Samuel 16:7, "For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart" (ESV).

First and foremost, we need to have our hearts prepared to minister for the Lord and be vessels that He can use. But, if you have been asked to stand on the stage and sing, every eye in the congregation will be on you while you are singing. So, you do need to give thought to what you will wear. With that in mind, I'd like to offer a few suggestions to get you dressed and ready to sing on time!

Modesty is an issue. Now, if you are a guy, this topic isn't complicated. For contemporary services, current trends include low-riders and ripped jeans. I suggest putting on something nice and pulling your pants up enough so those low-riders aren't displaying more than needs to be seen. For us girls, modesty can be a big issue if you dress with the current trends, which are the shorter and tighter, the better. Remember, if what you're wearing is too short or too tight or too low cut, then your song may get divided attention while your outward appearance will get a lot of attention. I'm not suggesting that you be prudish, but be tastefully modest.

The girls on our worship team came up with a dress code that I'll share with you. First of all, girls, if you're standing on a stage to sing, and you choose to wear a dress or skirt, make sure it's long enough so that the people on the front row aren't distracted. Next, if your outfit is low-cut in the front, add a cute camisole underneath. Also, check yourself in a mirror to see if you can see straight through what you're wearing.

Most of all, remember that you're there to reflect Jesus and place the attention on Him. So, the next time you find yourself staring into your closet wondering what you should wear to sing in church, remember these suggestions, and you'll be dressed and ready to go on time!
